Pirated copies thicken `Harry Potter' plot
By Chris O'Brien
Mercury News
Article Launched: 07/18/2007 01:28:37 AM PDT

Harry Potter dies!

No, wait, he lives!

If you're lying awake at night counting the minutes until Saturday when the final Harry Potter book is released, then boot up the computer and get Googling. Copies of the closely guarded "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" may have leaked onto the Internet, sparking legal skirmishes and outrage among fans who are trying to avoid spoilers at all costs.

The apparent leak demonstrates how difficult it can be to keep secrets in a digital age. But the key word is "apparent." Because amid all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, there's one question that nobody will answer: Are the copies real?

So read on, you Muggles. This story is spoiler-free.

Two Bay Area companies received subpoenas this week from Scholastic, the book's U.S. publisher, ordering them to remove possible copies of the book that had been posted on their sites. The book's British and U.S. publishers have gone to extraordinary measures to prevent unauthorized leaks, spending millions on security.

On Tuesday, Scholastic remained cagey about whether these or any other versions pingponging around the Internet were, in fact, authentic.

"There are multiple versions of what allege to be official copies of the book on the Internet, and they are conflicting," wrote Kyle Good, a Scholastic spokesman, in an e-mail to the Mercury News. "We have obtained a subpoena to gather information quickly to try to keep spoilers, real or unreal, off of Internet sites that fans might be on."
If the leaks are real, then it's hardly the first such incident. While occasionally creators succeed in keeping secrets, like the end of the Sopranos, more often music, books, movies - just about anything that can be digitized - can be found well in advance of the official release.

"It's just so easy to distribute and copy information with the Internet and digital technology," said Jack Lerner, a research fellow at the University of California-Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law. "It's one of the downsides to all this technology. It makes it harder to keep information under wraps."

The book appeared on several Web sites and file-sharing services Monday. That brought swift legal action from Scholastic, which filed for a subpoena in U.S. District Court in San Francisco against Photobucket, which has its main offices in Denver and Palo Alto, and Gaia Online, a Milpitas social-networking site that caters mainly to teens and college students.

Bill Danon, a Gaia spokesman, said the company received its subpoena Monday. After conferring with its lawyer, the company suspended the user for 14 days and removed the material, citing a ban on posting copyrighted material.

Danon declined to reveal the identity of the user or that person's avatar, but noted that the site's users tend to be 13 to 22 years old.

Officials at Photobucket, recently acquired by Fox Interactive Media, declined to comment but apparently also removed the material.

On one of the biggest fan sites, MuggleNet, fans were aghast. An item posted about the leaks and subpoenas had drawn 715 comments by Tuesday afternoon. The comment section included a big warning that people might be posting spoilers in the forum.

"I hate it when people ruin things like this for everyone else who wants to enjoy it the right way," read one post by weasley24601. "I think that's just the most awful thing ever. Especially when there's spoilers where you least suspect it. People are jerks."

Scholastic Press went to great lengths to protect the security of the Harry Potter books, explained Lisa Holton, an executive vice president of the company, and president of its Book Fairs and Trade division, because of J.K. Rowling.

"What comes directly from Ms. Rowling is the whole notion that her readers - you know, she's really, really connected and concerned about her readers - and she really wants to stay true to the pact that they have, which is that everyone comes to it at the same moment. Details of how we do that are left up to us."

Holton said Scholastic instituted a whole series of security measures that began when the manuscript arrived, and extend through its printing and distribution. The company is also counting on fans who have been running a grass-roots campaign urging everyone not to spoil the ending.

How secretive is the company? Holton wouldn't even say whether she's read the book.

"If I had read it, I couldn't tell you," she said.

For Magic is might and none would be more missed than our heroic mates which met with their makers in this tale of our Harry potter and his Deathly Hallows.

Majestic nights and horcrux filled hallows lead this quest as they lead onto battle watching their mates die as magic is might and only the strong and cleverly lucky survive.

Love survives and strongly fills the heart of the righteous as our noble hero’s flounder with such beliefs that only good can triumph over evil.

Spells are flying and death screams in defeat as its soul crumbles from the light that tears through to see the day that beckons it.

Through the broken mirror an eye appears which guides our fearless hero forth to answer his destiny and face his fear and anger as it threatens to overwhelm him into a bottomless despair as his comrades in arms fall one by one all for the greater good of Magic kind.

Prophetic dreams of the horrors to come, visions of the evil that is to befall anyone who gets in his way, Our Villain claims the boy who has made a mockery of him since the year he has been born. A prophecy gives way to obsession and no death is too trivial to give way to triumph.

Remember, in HBP (Chapter 6, pg 106 [U.S. version]), where Mr. Weasley announced that Mr. Ollivander had been "dragged off"? To my mind, that means that Voldemort has kidnapped the maker of wands for a sinister purpose, of which the answer is obvious. Voldy figured out why his wand and Harry's didn't work in combat, and he's making Mr. Ollivander construct him a new wand, one which *will* function properly against Harry.

That Voldemort, always thinking ahead! I just hope Harry's able to do the same.

I was rereading Goblet of Fire, and I was struck by fact that both Harry and Voldemort have wands that contain a feather from Fawkes the phoenix. Is this coincidence, or is there a deeper meaning?

Fawkes has long been a fixture in Dumbledore's office, and there has never been an explanation of where the phoenix came from; nor why it has been so solicitous to Harry. Fawkes attended to his wounds in the Chamber of Secrets, was responsible for bring him the weapon to defeat the basilisk, and healed him when he emerged from the maze in Goblet of Fire. All without being commanded to do so by Dumbledore. Why?

Is it possible that the phoenix was not Dumbledore's, but rather the property of the headmaster? That sounds contradictory, I know, but consider this: the phoenix is essentially immortal. It would outlive each and every owner, and rather than attach itself to a mortal, would it not make more sense to belong to the institution itself? Furthermore, the phoenix is known in mythology as "the king of birds"; therefore it is logical to assume that such royalty would rightly be in the presence of the leader of the school. In fact, the phoenix might well represent a form of "acid test" for prospective faculty.

Fawkes did not protest when Voldemort visited Dumbledore seeking a teaching post, but neither did he alight on Voldemort's knee, as he did for Harry once. Is it possible that Fawkes can sense the presence of someone who has the potential to be a Hogwarts headmaster? Voldemort wants power, certainly, but he is also attracted to the school as well. And though Phineas Nigellus was, in the words of Sirius Black, "the least popular headmaster" in the school's history, he was one; and the Black family is well-known for producing Dark wizards.

Mr. Ollivander said that, "the wand chooses the wizard", implying that wands have some sort of sentience or will of their own. Such sentience might have its origins in the core element of the wand itself, perhaps retaining something from the creature of their origins. If so, then Fawkes' will remains a crucial force within Harry's immediate future.

Although Harry felt that after the phoenix's dirge that it would never be seen again, he is, after all, still unfamiliar with the nuances of the school itself. Fawkes is undoubtedly still in mourning over Dumbledore's death. But after the grief, the bird might well return to the fray, to stand beside its choice of new headmaster. Affter aiding Harry once, it seems unlikely that it would abandon him now.

I had a thought the other night--Rowling is famous for foreshadowing events. Is it possible that the final fate of the Trio is foreshadowed by what happened to the previous generation?

Harry, Ron and Hermione show several parallels to Sirius, Remus, and Lily. Both sets of boys are great pals, both girls are very good witches. Sirius camped out at James' house during the holidays to avoid a bad home life, much as Harry does at Ron's. Both Lily and Hermione are Muggleborns.

So, if the foreshadowing has weight, this is what might happen: Ron and Hermione will be Head Boy and Head Girl, respectively, when Hogwarts reconvenes (presumably after the death of Voldemort). Furthermore, they will marry right out of school, with Harry acting as Ron's best man. Certainly there would be no other that Ron would ask to stand beside him.

Sirius' work after Hogwarts has never been explained. There was a gray period between his graduation from school (1978?) and his incarceration (1981), but given his work for the Order of the Phoenix, it's possible he worked as an Auror, which is Harry's most desired profession! After Voldemort is destroyed, Harry's resume will be considerable, and no doubt many anti-Dark Arts outfits will be clamoring for him to sign up with them. However, given his teaching work with the DA, it's more likely Hogwarts will offer him the professorship of Defense Against the Dark Arts, a job he would be eminently qualified for!

But there might be another twist in store. Consider that when Ron looked into the mirror of Erised, he not only saw himself as Head Boy, but also as Quidditch Captain. With Harry assuming that role in HBP, the only way Ron could assume that was if Harry gave him the job. If Harry joins the Hogwarts staff he would have to hand the Captaincy over to somebody else, and who better than his best friend?

So, Deathly Hallows might well end with Harry staying at Hogwarts (which he has always called "home"), while Ron and Hermione go to build their own home elsewhere in the Wizarding world.

-------------------Background---------------------------------
-Severus Snape was born to Tobias Snape(a Muggle) and Eileen Prince( a witch) making him a half-blood wizard.

-As a first-year student at Hogwarts( according to Sirius Black) he knew more Dark hexes and curses than most seventh-years.

-Harry learns that Snape was rather unpopular and isolated in his teens, and had a fascination with the Dark Arts.

-Harry also comes to suspect that Snape suffered neglect by his parents, and may have witnessed abuse, or been abused by his father, when he sees three memories during his lessons in Occlumency given by Snape.

-Snape suffered relentless teasing and bullying at the hands of Harry's father James Potter and his godfather Sirius Black.

-In Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry learns that Sirius attempted to lure Snape to his death, only to have James warn Snape of the danger, but only out of fear of expulsion from Hogwarts. Nevertheless, Snape became indebted to James for this favour, and Albus Dumbledore has suggested that Snape is still influenced by the power of that debt.

-While at Hogwarts, Snape invented a number of spells, one or more of which James learned and used against him in public during their fifth year.

-Sirius tells Harry that Snape belonged to a gang of Slytherins at school, including Bellatrix Black, Rodolphus Lestrange, Avery, Wilkes and Evan Rosier, who all involved themselves in the Dark Arts and became Death Eaters.

-In an interview, J. K. Rowling stated that Snape had been loved, but did not specify by whom, or the nature of the love.

-Snape is a powerful and gifted wizard whose abilities include potion-making and duelling. He is extremely skilled in Occlumency, He is also gifted in nonverbal spell casting and spell invention.

---------------------------- His Role---------------------------------------------------
-In his first year, Harry mistakenly suspects Snape of trying to steal the Philosopher's Stone. Snape appears to be muttering a curse to harm Harry when Harry is shaken wildly about on his broom during a Quidditch game. It was actually Professor Quirrell (in league with Voldemort) working the curse on Harry, and was Snape attempting to protect Harry with a counter-curse.

-On several occasions, Snape tries to have Harry expelled from the school. Yet in spite of these attempts to sabotage Harry's school career, Snape still saves Harry's life on more than one occasion

-At the end of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Dumbledore attempts to convince the Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge, that Voldemort has returned and is once again a danger. Snape tries to help by showing Fudge the renewed Dark Mark on his arm, still clearly visible from when it burnt black at Voldemort's revival.

-Dumbledore subsequently sends Snape on a secret mission. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix it is confirmed by Snape that this mission was to rejoin the Death Eaters and spy on Voldemort.

-In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Dumbledore assigns Snape the task of giving Harry lessons in Occlumency, the protection of one's mind from outside intrusion or influence. Snape is chosen because he is extremely skilled in both Occlumency and reasonably so in its companion art of Legilimency, the discerning of thoughts and feelings from another's mind, both proficiencies undoubtedly useful in his work as a spy.

-In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, we learn that Snape lives in a dirty, ramshackle, apparently deserted Muggle slum near a river, at the end of a street called Spinner's End. It is there Snape swears an Unbreakable Vow to Draco Malfoy's mother, Narcissa, that he will protect Draco, help him complete a task set by Voldemort and complete the task himself if Draco seems likely to fail. Snape is finally appointed to his coveted post as Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher.

-He is seen by Hagrid arguing with Dumbledore, saying that Dumbledore took "too much for granted", and that there was something that he was no longer willing to do. Dumbledore insists that it was agreed and must be done.

-During the battle along the battlements of the school, Dumbledore, who is still suffering the effects of drinking an unknown potion, sends Harry to get Snape. At that moment, Draco Malfoy arrives. Harry is hidden under his Invisibility Cloak, but Dumbledore prevents him taking any part in what occurs by using a non-verbal paralysing spell upon him. He then begins to reason with Malfoy but is interrupted by a group of Death Eaters, who goad Draco into killing Dumbledore. Snape arrives and assassinates Dumbledore instead (it has been verified by JKR that Dumbledore is actually dead) using the Avada Kedavra curse. Snape, Malfoy and the Death Eaters flee the castle, pursued by Harry (now released from his magical paralysis). Harry attempts to engage Snape in magical combat, to no effect; Snape easily blocks his spells and, in fact, tells Harry what he is doing wrong. He is fiercely attacked by Buckbeak and disappears into the night with the Death Eaters.

-------- The Truth-------------
-Both the followers and opponents of Voldemort think Snape is working as a double agent on their behalf. Both Dumbledore and Lord Voldemort are described to be masters of Legilimency, which they can use to detect deceit, while Snape is accomplished at Occlumency, which allows him to lie undetectably. Dumbledore says on several occasions that he trusts Snape completely, but Voldemort also trusts him, enough so to include him in some of his most important plans.

-Snape's skill at Legilimency may give an indication of his "loyalty". In the chapter "The Rogue Bludger" in The Chamber of Secrets, Hermione Granger asks for a diversion so that she may steal the necessary ingredients for the Polyjuice Potion from Snape's cupboard. Harry provides this diversion by throwing a firework into a cauldron, causing much mayhem. Snape's reaction is understandably furious, and he exclaims that he will expel the guilty person from Hogwarts. He stares at Harry, who later says to his friends that he felt that Snape knew it was him. Although he took no action against Harry in this instance, Snape does try on later occasions to have Harry expelled, seemingly with total sincerity. Harry had long suspected that Snape had some sort of mind reading powers long before the 5th book.

-According to Divination teacher Sybill Trelawney, Snape was eavesdropping at her door at the Hog's Head during her interview with Dumbledore for a teaching job at Hogwarts. During the interview she fell into a trance, delivering a key prophecy regarding Voldemort and a foe that had the power to vanquish him. Dumbledore told Harry that there was an eavesdropper, but said that the eavesdropper only heard the first half of the prophecy and only reported that portion of it to Voldemort. This conflicts with Trelawney's account to Harry, in which Snape is only discovered after she had delivered the whole prophecy. Voldemort identified Harry as the subject of the prophecy and, seeking to kill the infant Harry, murdered Lily and James Potter. Harry now believes that Snape bears responsibility for the death of his parents, which serves to amplify his hatred of Snape.

-In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, in the chapter "The Lost Prophecy", Dumbledore explains that Snape coordinated the rescue of Harry and his friends from the Ministry of Magic. This rescue was crucial to saving their lives during the fight there, where they were outnumbered two-to-one by Death Eaters, and, though this fight still resulted in Sirius's death, confirmed Snape's loyalty in the eyes of the Order. More significantly, Voldemort was prevented from determining the full content of the prophecy, and rumours of his "revival" could no longer be denied. Dumbledore also says that Snape went into the Forbidden Forest to rescue Harry when he and the others failed to return after leading Umbridge there.

-In the chapter of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Spinner's End, Snape claims to Bellatrix Lestrange, "I have done my utmost to have him thrown out of Hogwarts", but in the chapter Sectumsempra, Harry grievously injures Draco Malfoy and Professor McGonagall tells him he is lucky not to be expelled, but Snape merely gives him several detentions. Snape is a respected member of the Order of the Phoenix, but in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince he kills Dumbledore with Avada Kedavra, the Killing Curse, one of the three Unforgivable Curses. His actions were possibly influenced by his Unbreakable Vow sworn to Narcissa Malfoy, which requires him to ensure that Draco's task for Voldemort is completed. Draco's task (though it is never said explicitly) is assumed to have been to kill Dumbledore, but as he was unable to do so, it fell to Snape. Debate has arisen as to the actual task that was assigned to Draco and the exact meaning of the Vow, since, as is frequently the case with such literary devices, their terms are not precisely clear. There is also a considerable amount of debate over whether or not Snape could have saved Dumbledore, given the presence of several Death Eaters, and the considerable doubt that apparently exists in their ranks about Snape's loyalties.

-In the chapter "Flight of the Prince", Snape flees Hogwarts with Draco and the Death Eaters, but is confronted by Harry. Snape blocks all of Harry's attacks, and further taunts him about his lack of skills in Occlumency and with non-verbal spells. He also prevents Death Eaters from harming Harry, blocking a Cruciatus Curse thrown at him and telling the Death Eaters that "Potter belongs to the Dark Lord". His actions towards Harry may be those of an enemy, but could also be interpreted as those of a schoolmaster or ally: he may be ridiculing Harry's attacks and failure to grasp Occlumency and non-verbal spells, or be giving disguised instructions to Harry that he needs to improve at Occlumency and non-verbal spell casting to stand any chance of defeating Voldemort. He overmatches Harry and could have killed or maimed him, but he does not.

-Snape's actions have given rise to intense speculation that Dumbledore might have anticipated his own death. It is clear that Dumbledore was seriously weakened by the destruction of the 'Gaunt Ring' Horcrux, which burned and blackened his hand. The injury was incurable by wizarding standards, but Dumbledore credits Snape with halting the spread of damage to the rest of his body. Dumbledore was further weakened when forced to consume an unknown potion in the seaside cave. When Harry attempts to warn Dumbledore about Draco's actions, Dumbledore dismisses his worries, telling Harry that he already understands the situation much better than Harry. His ambiguous last words, "Severus... please...", may be taken as pleading with Snape not to kill him and to refuse Voldemort's orders, or as the exact opposite, a request to proceed in accordance with some plan of Dumbledore's.

-Dumbledore repeatedly makes it clear that Snape has his full confidence. At Igor Karkaroff's trial, as seen in Dumbledore's Pensieve, Dumbledore testified that Snape spied on the Death Eaters "at great personal risk",[HP4] before Voldemort's fall from power. Interestingly, Karkaroff insisted that this was untrue. In The Half-Blood Prince, Lupin told Harry that though he and the Marauders had a childhood rivalry with Snape, he trusted that Snape was on the right side. He later explains after Dumbledore's death that this was only because of Dumbledore. Minerva McGonagall also revealed a distrust of Snape. She added that Dumbledore always implied that he had a very good reason to trust Snape. Slughorn showed surprise that Snape had acted in this way.

Had a brainstorm the other night, and thought I'd share it with you all:

First, let me say that I've been rereading Goblet of Fire, and I've noticed that Hermione's crusade to liberate House-Elves is something that has been a running thread in books 5 & 6 as well. So, I have to wonder if that is going to be her downfall.

Dobby, of course, collected all the clothes she left lying around Gryffindor Tower, telling Harry that the other House Elves found them insulting. Her attempts to cheer up Winky with the thought of money and possession only made the elf cry more, while her campaign buttons earned her only ridicule. Her efforts have gotten her nowhere, but she continues with them unabated, and even broached to Sirius Black the idea of freeing Kreacher. Black said, "It would kill him." But isn't it more likely that an enraged elf would kill its oppressor?

The cover of the British edition of Deathly Hallows shows a wound Harry, as well as a hand holding dagger or sword. It's been assumed by many the hand is Ron's, but I don't think so. Look closely. There is the distinct silhouette of a House Elf on Harry's back, directly between Ron and Hermione, and the hand holding the sword has the same skin tone as the Elf--pale grey!

Kreacher hates and despises Harry Potter, and he has little love for either Ron or Hermione, calling them "blood-traitor" and "mud-blood", respectively. If Hermione's misplaced sentiments lead her into any kind of mistake, it would likely originate through her mistaken attempt to "bring justice" to a certain situation. She has always been a champion of upholding the rules and making everything right and honorable. And as John Milton said, "The road to Hell is paved with good intentions."

If Hermione somehow frees Kreacher, he would not hesitate to take revenge for such an insult, and he has proven himself quite capable of causing death and destruction on a grand scale.

One final thought: Another running thread in JKR's books is the disaster which occur when something is left undone. Harry's failure to learn Occlumency, and to open the gift package from Sirius could have saved Sirius' life; etc. Will Harry regret not informing Hermione that her campaign to save House Elves never actually bore fruit? Will that become another, "If only..."?

hey everyone....i'm new to the tribe. looks great.
just have two questions that i'd love to hear some thoughts on...

1. in both SS and PoA, hermoine says "ouch ron, you stepped on my foot" (or something to that affect)
in SS, she says it while the three are under the invisibility cloak, heading to the trap door. in PoA she says it in the train compartment just before the dementors come in.

what's up with that? is someone there? someone with another invisibility cloak? its in both movies, though i can't remember if its in the books too. jk puts some little things in here and there as clues, maybe these are? but to put that line/action in twice? seems interesting.

2. crookshanks....in PoA she chases and was blamed for eating wormtai for a time.
do you think that crookshanks is also an animagus, and knew that wormtail was the rat? someone who thought dead? or someone we have not been introduced to yet?
do you think crookshanks told sirius that wormtail was the rat? how else did he know? jk never said that in the books did she? didn't harry see crookshanks with snuffles or going into the woods in PoA?

ok, theres 2 questions from a harry potter fanatic......one who has read the books too many times and keeps reading them and now has formed many theories and questions that may or may not be valid or even relevant, but its fun.
feel free to comment, i'd love to hear others theories on them.

LONDON (Reuters) - Daniel Radcliffe shook off the mantle of Harry Potter on Wednesday to win rave reviews for his stage portrayal of a tortured teenager in the grueling psychological thriller "Equus."

"No flash in the magic pan," said The Guardian after the London premier of the play which saw the 17-year-old star of the boy wizard movies come of age on the stage.

Radcliffe won praise for his performance but critics argued that Peter Shaffer's play, first performed in 1973, had not stood the test of time.

Fellow actors like Christian Slater and Richard E.Grant hailed Radcliffe on the first night for taking on such a testing role and the critics agreed.

With much media hype over Radcliffe's iconic nude scene in the play, advance sales had already topped two million pounds, making the play virtually critic-proof.

And London's staid Gielgud Theater was besieged every night at previews by adoring teenage fans of Radcliffe.

"Brilliant Radcliffe throws off Harry Potter's cloak," The Daily Telegraph said. "He is a thrilling stage actor of unexpected range and depth."

The Independent was equally warm, saying of Radcliffe "He cuts a compelling figure" in the role of a troubled teen who blinds six horses at the stable where he works. "But he is not that well served by the production."

"What was striking was the emergence of young Dan Radcliffe in the artistic raw, tested as an actor and found equal to the stretching role," The Daily Mail said.

Richard Griffiths, who performed the role of Potter's vile Uncle Vernon in the Potter films, plays the psychiatrist trying to cure the deeply disturbed boy.

Griffiths, warm in praise of Radcliffe afterwards, said: "He has an old head on young shoulders. He has to be regarded in a new way because he is a proper actor."

Radcliffe, eager to make the tricky transition from child star to adult actor, was fully aware of the risk he was taking.

His hands still shaking after his emotion-charged first night performance, he told Reuters: "It would have been very easy to just do a very similar performance for your entire career.

"Half the excitement of stepping up to do a new role was thinking God I might not be able to do this but I am going to give it a go," he said.

American theater critic Matt Wolf praised Radcliffe, saying: "I do admire him for taking it on. This is jumping in at the deep end. He makes you forget about Harry Potter but you can't help wishing he was in a stronger vehicle. It has not stood the test of time."

Him coming before the wizengamot, failing to pay the twins, being chased after by goblins, "losing" Bertha Jorkins from his own department (who's to say that he didn't send her to Albania on purpose to begin with?!) and waiting months before starting to look for her, most importantly, trying to HELP HARRY WIN THE TOURNEMENT (aka get to the portkey first).... I know that she laid it out there he was a gambling loser and was just trying to fascilitate Harry winning in the interest of paying off his debts, but... over and over again is he portrayed as the innocent, boyish one... Who then turns out to be shady. At his own turn before the wizengamot he had them clapping for his latest quidditch moves. And we've never actually seen be a specifically GOOD guy, have we?
"Harry Potter" star Daniel Radcliffe, who strips for his new role in London's West End revival of the play "Equus," has ignited a bit of a media firestorm by posing for racy promotional photos for the production.

The Tony-Award-winning drama tells the story of a stable-hand who has an erotic fixation with horses. In one photo, Radcliffe, 17, dares to bare it all alongside a white horse; in another, he is pictured with a naked Joanna Christie, the actress who portrays his girlfriend.

"Equus," directed by Thea Sharrock, opens at London's Gielgud Theater on February 27. Tony Award-winning actor Richard Griffiths plays a pyschiatrist who treats Radcliffe's character.

"Part of me wants to shake up people's perception of me, just shove me in a blender," Radcliffe said in a recent interview with Newsweek magazine.

"It's a really challenging play, and if I can pull it off -- we don't know if I can yet -- I hope people will stop and think, 'Maybe he can do something other than Harry,' " he said.

Radcliffe, who was discovered seven years ago in the audience of a London theater, reprises his role as the bespectacled boy wizard in "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," slated for release July 13.

How does J.K. Rowling feel now that she has finished the seventh and final Harry Potter book? As the author herself confided Tuesday on her Web site, "Charles Dickens put it better than I ever could":

"It would concern the reader little, perhaps, to know how sorrowfully the pen is laid down at the close of a two-years' imaginative task; or how an Author feels as if he were dismissing some portion of himself into the shadowy world, when a crowd of the creatures of his brain are going from him for ever," reads the passage from Dickens' preface to "David Copperfield."

Adds Rowling: "To which I can only sigh, try seventeen years, Charles."

Rowling announced February 1 that "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" would come out July 21, bringing to an end one of the great phenomena of literary history. More than 325 million copies of the first six books have sold.

So, how does she feel? Having quoted Dickens, Rowling has a go at it on her own.

"I always knew that Harry's story would end with the seventh book, but saying goodbye has been just as hard as I always knew it would be," she writes.

"Even while I'm mourning, though, I feel an incredible sense of achievement. I can hardly believe that I've finally written the ending I've been planning for so many years. I've never felt such a mixture of extreme emotions in my life, never dreamed I could feel simultaneously heartbroken and euphoric."

She continues.

"If it comes as any consolation, I think that there will be plenty to continue arguing and speculating about, even after 'Deathly Hallows' comes out. So if you're not yet ready to quit the message boards, do not despair," she writes.

"I'm almost scared to admit this, but one thing has stopped me collapsing in a puddle of misery on the floor. While each of the previous Potter books has strong claims on my affections, 'Deathly Hallows' is my favorite, and that is the most wonderful way to finish the series."

LONDON, England (AP) -- Harry Potter fans, the end is near.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," the last of seven installments of J.K. Rowling's mega-selling international phenomenon, will be published July 21 -- at midnight, of course, a time to be marked by celebrations and more than a few tears, as Rowling wraps up the magical adventures of the boy wizard, his friends and his enemies.

The author posted a brief announcement on her Web site Thursday, followed soon by releases from her British publisher, Bloomsbury, and U.S. publisher, Scholastic Inc. (Gallery: A guide to Harry Potter)

Readers immediately rejoiced, with dozens of ecstatic messages posted on the Potter fan site, www.theleakycauldron.com, within minutes of the announcement.

"OMGOMGOMGOMG!!!!!!!!! I CANNOT BELIEVE THIS!!!!" read one typical message.

"WAH!!! I think I'm going crazy!!!! We finally have a date!!!" added another fan.

Other comments were sadder, noting the series' conclusion.

"I can't wait to read the book, but at the same time, I'm afraid to read it," read a message from a fan named Christine, who identified herself as a "30-something" mom. "I can't stand the thought of anything happening to the characters that I've grown to love! What an odd feeling."

Potter readers have a lot to look forward to, and to fear. Rowling's stories have darkened considerably over the years and the author has said two characters will be killed off in Book 7.

"I don't always enjoy killing my characters. I didn't enjoy killing the character who died at the end of Book 6," Rowling said during a reading last summer at Radio City Music Hall, declining to name that person in case someone had yet to finish the book. "I really didn't enjoy doing that but I had been planning that for years so it wasn't quite as poignant as you might imagine. I'd already done my grieving when I actually came to write it."

The print run and number of pages have yet to be revealed, but judging from the suggested cover price, a meaty $34.99, $5 more than Potter 6, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," the last book will likely match or exceed the 600-plus page length of previous releases.

"We have held the price for the past four years," Scholastic publicist Kyle Good told The Associated Press. "In that time, costs of production, paper, trucking, gas and security -- to be sure all readers can enjoy the book at the release time -- have all increased."

Many fans will pay much less for "Deathly Hallows," with Amazon.com quickly announcing the book would be sold for $18.89, a 46 percent discount. Price competition has been so intense over the years that many retailers have acknowledged they don't make money on the fantasy series, depending instead on customers buying other books along with Potter.

Since Rowling first introduced Harry and his fellow students at Hogwarts to the world 10 years ago, with a now comically modest promotional campaign, the books have sold more than 325 million copies in 64 languages and inspired four hit movies.

The fifth film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," is scheduled to come out July 21, just eight days before the final book's release.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is a Warner Bros. film. The studio, like CNN, is a unit of Time Warner.

Sorry, e-book fans, whoever you are. You will be able to read the new Harry Potter on paper, listen to it, probably purchase it in Braille. But don't expect to download the text — at least legally.

Author J.K. Rowling has not allowed the first six Potter stories to be released as e-books and has no plans to change that for the seventh and final work, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Neil Blair, a lawyer with Rowling's literary agency, told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Rowling has cited two reasons over the years: concern about online piracy (which has never been a major problem for the Potter books), and the desire for readers to experience the books on paper. E-books, hyped as the future of publishing during the dot-com craze of the late 1990s, remain a tiny portion of the multibillion dollar industry.

The author herself writes in longhand, a preference that led to a rather amusing delay in Potter VII last April.

"Why is it so difficult to buy paper in the middle of town?" the author, a resident of Edinburgh, Scotland, lamented in a diary entry posted at the time on her website.

"What is a writer who likes to write longhand supposed to do when she hits her stride and then realizes, to her horror, that she has covered every bit of blank paper in her bag? Forty-five minutes it took me, this morning, to find somewhere that would sell me some normal, lined paper. And there's a university here!" she wrote.

Rowling announced last week that Deathly Hallows would come out July 21. The six previous books have sold more than 325 million copies.

So, it's been something I've noticed in the movies. There are two phrases that crop up in most--if not every one--of the movies. I've attempted to discuss this with friends and they all look at me like I'm crazy.

First, we have the phrase that almost sounds like a sampled/looped soundbite!

"That was /wicked/, Harry!"

Always said in an extremely awed voice, after Harry's done something spectacular. (In SS, after he recapture's Neville's Rememberall... In PoA, after Harry rides Buckbeak... Etc.)

And, the last... I can't exactly quote it, because I have absolutely -no idea- what's being said. It /sounds/ like:

"BAGS-a-roolah!"

Always said in the train station--usually before they pass through the barrier to Platform 9 3/4. (In SS, it's /just/ before Harry asks the man where he can find Platform 9 3/4---to which, of course, the man responds, "Fink yer bein' funny, do ya? Nine an' free quarters...")

Ok, so am I crazy? :D Anyone else noticed these bits of mirroring? Are both of the phrases in all four movies? (I can't remember, for the life of me. I used to be almost positive they appeared in every movie, but I can't remember the exact instances in CoS and GoF.)

My first post--hope you like it!

I absolutely LOVE the character of Dumbledore in the books. He is patient, calm, witty, and very wise. I believe his character garners a certain respect.

I loved the original actor in HP I & II, Richard Harris. He perfectly transcended Dumbledore to the screen. In fact, every subsequent HP book I've read I imagine Richard Harris. He was calm, grounded, soft-spoken, with a little jovial wit, but very wise when needed to. He even looked like Dumbledore should!

Yes, I know Richard Harris has passed on, but I believe they could do a much more respectable job of assigning another actor to the noble role of Dumbledore. The actor which now portrays Dumbledore, Michael Gambon, is, I believe, very wrong for the job. He portrays Michael as a Dumbledore who is unsettled, nervous, and quick to anger. None of these traits are what I experience with Dumbledore in the books.

I am not the only one among my friends who believe this is true. My friends and I loved the Goblet of Fire, but a copuple of us chose to psychologically omit Gambon's Dumbledore and pretend it was Richard Harris' version! We had to, Mr. Gambon was ruining my impression of Dumbledore from the books!

I am sure Michael Gambon is an excellent, experienced actor, but experience should not be the only criteria to assign to a role. I wonder if more people think this is true, and wish that the current actor be replaced.

Around 60 AD, the Romans began 'harrassing' a small tribe in Britain, called the Iceni. One of many pagan tribes, the Iceni were yet another group to suffer under the Romans' growing empire. After the Iceni's king died, his wife Boudicca took over the tribe and declared war on the Romans, after she and her daughters were forced to suffer many humiliations at their hands. She, with the help of the Iceni and other tribes, led a revolt that lasted for several months, before she died in battle. Here comes the interesting part: No one knows exactly where Boudicca was buried, but one of the more popular stories involves her body being placed in London. Even more interesting, is that the supposed burial site is now the location of King's Cross Station. And if things could not get more intriguing than that, she is supposed to be located right under either Platform 9 or 10.

Do you think this is a coincidence? Do you think JKR had this in mind when she wrote the books? Has anyone else happened upon similar stuff in the books?

My favorite is Mad Eye Moody. Powerful, respected, with a distinguished career as the best Auror in the Wizarding World. A bit paranoid, but not without reason. His nine-month imprisonment in GoF is ample proof that he still has a lot of enemies, but even they give him a certain amount of respect--he was kept alive, after all!

He took the trouble in OoP to show Harry a picture of the original Order, with his parents standing proudly in the ranks. Although Harry didn't understand or appreciate the gesture, Moody's reasons are obvious: he was attempting to show Harry that his parents were proud to be fighting for freedom; they weren't always in hiding. They were figures to be doubly proud of, and this was something that Moody could show him.

This priest goes through parts of the book and talks about the meanings behind peoples names and different events. I was literally blown away at how much though J.K. Rowling put into these books. If you're an iPod user, check this out. There was even a podcast about some Bishop at the Vatican who was saying how he felt there was evil written behind every sentence. This priest that does these podcasts is all for the books. Its interesting.

It was very eye-opening, and i learned alot about rowlings writing style and how she insterts characters and happenings into the book s when they are going to come into play later.
so, here are the things ive noticed, and believe:
1. dumbledore isn't dead. I really believe this. im sure everyone has heard by now the arguments of how right before dumbledore falls he says to draco that they can fake his death, hide them better than he could possible imagine. Also, in every book, the Draught of Living Death at least once; it is the first potion they make with Slughorn, and mentioned in the first class with snape the first year.
2. arithmancy will come into play somehow. every other subject we've spent time in the classrooms, learned something about it, but not arithmancy. Hermione, however, is always talking about how it is the most important, and it is the class she is never late for will miss.
3. wormtail will help harry somehow. At the end of the prisoner of azekeban, harry says to dumbledore that he wishes he had killed wormtail. dumbledore says that becuase he didnt, he had created a bond between them, and oneday, he would be thankful.

ok. thats what i think.

I think that Hagrid took Harry to Hogwarts so Madame Pomfrey could take care of his immediate needs... but then again, who knows?

When Pettigrew was to be killed by Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, he escapes in his rat form and rejoins Voldemort. All thanks to Harry. However, Peter now owes Harry a life debt. As Albus Dumbledore later explains to Harry, an ancient magic now binds the two, and, "A day may come when you will be very glad you saved Pettigrew's life".

He then makes a brief appearance in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. When Narcissa Malfoy and Bellatrix Lestrange visit Snape at his home, it is revealed Pettigrew is currently hiding there on Voldemort's orders. He rouses Snape's suspicion, however, by listening at keyholes for an unknown purpose.

Looks like we all forgot about Peter Pettigrew as a key player in the final fight.
Silly us.

I just read an intriguing rumor about the revelations in book 7. The implications are staggering.

RUMOR: Lily Evans and Narcissa Malfoy and Petunia are proven to be stepsisters. Since all of them are named after flowers, this is offered into evidence as "proof".

The story goes on to explain that Petunia, having failed to develop magical abilities, was the dumped-upon sibling who married at an early age to escape the Wizarding world. Lily set about proving herself, eventually becoming Head Girl in her year, but only in Gryffindor, rather than being a 'proper' Slytherin.

The reason I sincerely doubt this rumor is that if Draco Malfoy really was Harry's cousin, there's no way the bigmouth could have resisted rapping Harry in the mouth with it.

Any other thoughts?

" That's the main complaint I've always had about the movies, is that it doesn't really come across HOW hugely, monstrously evil VM is really supposed to be. How world-widedly huge.... ala Sauron. Maybe they're finally trying to make that point....."

Voldemort is not a super-villain on the scale of Sauron. V's humanity is all too evident at the end of TGOF when ego demands that he toy with H before killing him. The great V feels compelled to prove in front of his back-up of a dozen adult Death Eaters that he, V, is more powerful than a terrified 14-year-old. What a coward. He's a joke, AND H escapes perhaps in part because of V's ego-gratification games. What V obviously has is charisma which attracts devotees. But, despite his horcruxes, he's ultimately human, driven by human desires (even his unwise desire for immortality is characteristically human). He was actually in some ways most interesting in his duel with DD at the end of OOTP. There he had an equal opponent.

Sauron's evil is more holistically evil and corrosive--a shadow in the east. And as soon as that damned ring was within his vision and grasp, he tried to grab it, no muscle-flexing for his minions. Before that, his attention was on Aragorn because he thought A was his biggest threat.

1. Ptomaine poisoning from Wormtail's cooking.

2. Heart attack after being given a lifetime supply of Barney comic books.

3. Offer to pay Muggle assassins in gold Galleons (doubtful that Voldy could stop a .30-.30 round from 500 meters away, especially if he doesn't know it's coming).

4. Anti-personnel mine in the cushion of his favorite easy-chair.

5. Lightning bolt attack while Voldy's in the shower.

6. Bewitch him from afar so his body exudes the pheromones of a troll in heat, then sit back and watch the fun.

7. Introduce him to sushi, then offer him an incorrectly prepared blowfish.

8. Send a sneak thief in to replace his wand with one of Fred & George's fake ones, then challenge him to single combat.

9. Send a letter informing him he's won an all-expense-paid cruise (in the Bermuda Triangle).
10. Tell Darth Vader that someone else is claiming the title of "Dark Lord".
